Before he died, Jesus warned his followers that trouble would come because of his name - that in this world they would encounter all sorts of opposition because of their faith in him. He prepared that first generation and every generation since, for a fight. This warning came with some truly unusual commands - all of which are captured in the single command: "love your enemies." It is clear that we are to fight in ways foreign to this world, but native to those who know what it is to be forgiven by Jesus, saved and set free to love.

Psalm 127 and 121 - Who's Building Your House?

As anyone who has built or renovated a house knows, the process is often stressful, expensive and dogged with complications. under pressure, basic things like sleeping properly and eating well can seem like unaffordable luxuries. What if that 'house' under construction is a family or church? The same stresses can apply, even multiply, because the building materials keep growing, moving and changing! Psalms 127 & 121 are a vital reminder that if we are to build anything, we must build with the Lord, not on our own. Only he can make both the process and outcome fruitful.

Acts 25-26: On Trial For Hope

Most of us love a good legal drama, especially if the case climaxes with a moving closing address and justice served. He receives mixed responses, but the truth of his changed life remains. If you share his faith in Jesus Christ, then you also have the ultimate defence when the world puts you on trial. Indeed, a settled confidence in the Lord is our only hope in the one trial that will matter in the end - the day we all stand before Jesus as Judge.

<itunes:summary>Most of us love a good legal drama, especially if the case climaxes with a moving closing address and justice served. Towards the end of Acts we see Paul on trial before various authorities and the meat of his defence is his own story of salvation. He receives mixed responses, but the truth of his changed life remains. If you share his faith in Jesus Christ, then you also have the ultimate defence when the world puts you on trial. Indeed, a settled confidence in the Lord is our only hope in the one trial that will matter in the end - the day we all stand before Jesus as Judge.</itunes:summary>

Acts 17 Paul arrives in Athens

In Acts 17 Paul arrives in Athens – a city that had been one of the philosophical hubs of the Mediterranean for centuries. He is greatly distressed to see that the city is full of idols.
As he puts respectfully to the Athenians themselves in v22 – “I see that in every way you are very religious”
Would he think anything less of Sydney?

Acts 10 & 11 Crossing a Great Divide

For a number of years there has been passionate debate in this country about refugees and borders: who is in, who is out and who is drifting somewhere in between? Even within our city, perhaps even our suburb, we might observe distinct groups that guard their patch closely and are wary of 'outsiders'.
This could describe the church, at times. Today we see God do something long promised, but still startling to those who were there: he crosses the great divide between Jew and Gentile and brings both into his kingdom under Christ.

If you had told a 1st century Roman that the symbol of hope mercy and forgiveness would one day be a cross, he would have laughed.
This Easter we remember that Jesus, the Son of God, willingly suffered the shame, punishment and despair of his death by crucifixion for our sins.
A short time before he raised his friend Lazarus from the dead as a precursor of what was to come. Jesus is the resurrection and through him is forgiveness and life. He is the Son of God, who has conquered death and reigns as Lord.

<itunes:summary>If you had told a 1st century Roman that the symbol of hope mercy and forgiveness would one day be a cross, he would have laughed.

Jesus' fantastic promise is that he was leaving to prepare a place for his disciples in his Father's house. "We don't know where you are going, how can we know the way" Thomas said.
Jesus' reply "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me", indicates that it is not directions we need to know but a person - Jesus. He IS the truth, the Word of God, and has been from the beginning - and through his death and resurrection he brings life to all who believe.
